The history of the of the Red Hat Society started in the bright city of Tucson, Arizona. A woman by the name of Sue Ellen meandered along a thrift shop searching for things she might like to purchase. She picked purchasing an intense red fedora hat that struck her fancy.That brilliant

red fedora has now become the sign of the Red Hat Society. A couple of years after purchasing the hat she came across a poem “Caution”, written by the author Jenny Joseph. In the poem, a female discusses how she wants to act when she is older.

“When I am an old lady I will wear purple, With a red hat which does not go, and doesn’t match me. And I shall invest my pension on brandy and summertime gloves, And satin sandals, and state we’ve no loan for butter.” At the end of the poem it explains that the woman currently has to continue to be a fine example to those around her, but maybe she could reveal a little bit of that impishness through so people would not be too shocked of her actions when she’s older.The poem became Sue Ellen’s inspiration for a birthday gift for her good friend. She provided the poem, along with a vintage red hat, to her good friend Linda Murphy. She had hopes Linda would like it and maybe utilize it as an enjoyable design by hanging the hat next to the framed poem.Sue didn’t recognize exactly what a struck the poem would be to Linda, and ultimately others. Linda enjoyed the gift a lot that she provided it to other good friends, and they presented it to others. Ms. Joseph’s poem was an instant success among many of Sue and Linda’s friends.These wonderful ladies
chose that they were going to start a” Red Hat Society “. They chose to obtain together to have tea and delight in each others business. The dressed up in purple gowns and red hats that didn’t go, and had an extremely successful first tea party.That was when the first official Red Hat Society tea started. Each member of the Red Hat Society continued to invite new members, and the number of members and red hats started to grow. Now there are lots of sibling groups commemorating across the Nation.The Red Hat Society started with a simple, yet essential concept. Life is implied to be celebrated. Because, as the poem says, you don’t desire individuals who understand you to be too surprised when you are unexpectedly old and begin to wear purple.
